Edge of Chaos: 2024 in Review

As 2024 draws to a close, the Edge of Chaos team and community have much to celebrate. This year has been marked by significant milestones, each bringing us closer to a truly massive and immersive mediaeval MMO experience. Let's take a chronological journey through the standout events that shaped Edge of Chaos in 2024.

Say Hello to HyperScale: EoC and MetaGravity at GDC

In March, the development team unveiled groundbreaking advancements at the Game Developers Conference (GDC). Showcasing the revolutionary HyperScale Engine running Edge of Chaos alongside other MetaGravity partner games, the event demonstrated the game’s capability of supporting hundreds of concurrent client connections in a single instance and its potential to redefine online gaming by eliminating traditional server limitations.

While these numbers were impressive, they would soon be eclipsed in scale by much greater orders of magnitude. Read on…

Global Gameplay Tests

With the launch of the HyperScale Alpha Playtest Programme in Spring 2024, interested playtesters, MMO fans, and tech enthusiasts could sign up for a first look at the world of HyperScale gaming. June marked a pivotal moment with the first public HyperScale gameplay test, allowing players worldwide to experience the expansive world of Edge of Chaos.

The test provided invaluable feedback, enabling developers to fine-tune mechanics and optimize performance. The community's enthusiastic participation underscored the game's growing popularity and the anticipation surrounding its release.

Unveiling Grimshores

In September, the introduction of the Grimshores map added a new layer of depth and intrigue to the world of Edge of Chaos. This atmospheric environment, rich with unique areas such as villages, farms, and castles, became the focal point of subsequent playtests. Players explored its diverse landscapes, uncovering secrets and engaging in large-scale battles that tested their strategic prowess.

Ancient Nodes Collection Announced

Fall brought the exciting announcement of the Ancients, a groundbreaking class of node NFTs that extends beyond typical collectible or in-game assets. These nodes allow holders to function as territorial operators within Edge of Chaos, contributing to the game's infrastructure and influencing territory dynamics while earning rewards from player tithes and for network and anti-cheat management. The innovative approach ensures balanced gameplay without pay-to-win mechanics, setting a new standard for web3 games and cementing Edge of Chaos as the web3 game to watch in 2025.

A Major Scaling Milestone + AMAs

Coming just six months after the GDC demo, the final public playtest in late November saw the Grimshores map host a new record of 13,000 unique client connections. This marked a major development milestone for the game, illustrating the nearly unlimited scaling and fidelity that would be possible for game worlds using the HyperScale Engine.

Relay Servers positioned in strategic population centers around the globe also brought improved ping and latency to players in these regions, allowing seamless gameplay to be extended to a truly global community.

November and December were also dedicated to strengthening community bonds through AMAs on Discord and X with numerous MetaGravity and Edge of Chaos team members, including CEO Rashid Mansoor and Head of Studio Gareth Wilson. These sessions offered insights into the game's development and future roadmap, and took a transparent approach toward laying out how the game will be developed with both web3 gamers and enthusiasts and “traditional” MMO gamers in mind.

While the Ancients collection was a central theme, other topics included the Edge of Chaos roadmap, as well as the HyperScale Engine’s ability to make massive, seamless game worlds possible.

Big Things are Coming in 2025

As we bid farewell to 2024, the journey of Edge of Chaos is far from over - in fact, it’s just beginning.
